Quality Time

One of my favorite gifts to give our family for Christmas was this-
a box that included a beautiful nativity ornament and gift certificates for three activities for our family to enjoy together.

It's now six weeks after Christmas, and we've done them all.  We've have a great time looking forward to each one and making fun memories, and I can honestly say that many of the other Christmas gifts we all gave and received have been played with, packed up, and pretty much forgotten about (maybe with the exception of the Magnatiles, which everyone still fights over almost daily).  But these activities gave us something more to do during the sometimes boring weeks after the holidays are over, and these memories will stick with us long after the final hexbugs have been lost.

Activity Number 1- Bowling at the coolest bowling alley in town-
The kids have been wanting to check out the under-the-sea themed bowling alley since we moved here, and it didn't disappoint!
Just look at that giant shark!
And all those fish!
And the black lights!  And all those smiles.
It was a fun way to spend the afternoon.
I was there, too.  Just taking all of the pictures...

Activity Number 2- a pass to the local bounce house place.  That was a great way to burn off a bit of cabin fever one exceptionally cold winter day.  Not exactly picture-worthy, but it was a lot of fun, and we'll definitely be going there again before this long winter is over.

Activity Number 3- ice skating!
We have had a few unseasonably warm days this winter, and we originally wanted to go ice skating on one of those 50 degree days.  But it worked out best that we went on a 28 degree day, and that ended up being perfect, even when it started to snow.
The rink was practically empty, which gave us all the room we needed to navigate the ice.  Poor Noah was helpless on his skates (as we expected he would be) but he still was in awe of the " Ice!  Ice skating!"  Jason and I took turns making laps with him and helping out the bigger kids.
Emma and Adam used ice walkers, and Emma was surprisingly good!  She and I even took a few laps without the walker.  Her rosy-cheeked smile stuck with her the whole time, and she kept wanting to go back for more (with quick sips of hot cocoa in between each lap).
Adam, bless his sweet heart, was awful.  Really, really awful.  I know someday he'll be reading this and may not appreciate hearing that, but you have to understand that Adam is very athletic and very good at so many physical things- he won our bowling game up there, he learned how to ride a bike without training wheels just a few months after Leah, he does headstands on furniture, he runs circles around the rest of us, he can do tons of sit-ups without breaking a sweat, and just the other day he held the plank position for a ridiculously long time without any effort at all.  He's a six-year-old monkey with a six-pack.
But for whatever reason, he just could not figure out ice skating.  Maybe he thought you are supposed to skate on the sides of the blades instead of balancing on the actual blades?  The poor boy looked like a sailor without his sea legs (at one point I actually asked him as kindly as I possibly could if he was just pretending to be unable to stay upright) but he didn't give up!  He told me that he had challenged himself to keep trying until he was a perfect ice skater, and he certainly gave it some good effort.  Thank goodness he had a walker, or we'd surely have a broken bone today.
Of course, the whole thing was completely adorable to watch.
Leah, who is my doesn't-like-to-get-sweaty and often wonders why anyone would chose to participate in anything athletic over activities that are musical or creative child, had a wonderful time!  And she was good!  She fell a time or two, but she had a genuinely good time trying out this new fun activity.
And she was the last one off the ice, long after Jason had taken the littlest two back to warm up in the car.  Her newly acquired roller skating skills transferred easily onto the ice, and she clearly enjoyed herself.  And I loved watching her!  It kills me that she is such a big girl- no longer a baby that I have to take care of (or carry around on the ice), but a little friend that I got to hold hands with and chat with.
We will definitely be doing another family fun box in Christmases of the future!  This was a great way to spread out the holiday cheer and intentionally create fun family experiences that we all enjoyed.

Just January

Boy, I thought January would never end.  It always seems like the longest month to me, with no holidays, lots of work travel for Jason, and enough cold to keep us hidden in the house nearly all month long.  But we still managed to pack in plenty of fun this month, and I don't want to forget the little moments that made up our month.

Starting with this fun little month-long event.  I planted 8 paper white lily bulbs and we watched them grow over the course of a few weeks.
They shot up so fast.  We measured them each day, and the shoots were growing an inch a day.
There were times when I would turn around and I swear I could see the leaves rustling.  Some funny kid added the fly.
They started blooming before long.  Paperwhites are very pungent, and we never really got used to the soggy diaper smell they produce.  But they sure were beautiful!
And now I've got a bowl full of greens and no idea what to do with them.  But I have dreamed about the warmth and life of flowers blooming in the spring more than once this month, so for now I'm happy to keep a bit of life growing inside our home.
There was lots and and lots of reading and snuggling this month.  There always is, and I love it.

These kids make me smile with their fun and games and love.
Of course, once in awhile we have to break out the fighting shirt, but that seems to bring on the smiles, too.  (Don't worry kids, when I was little my parents made us stand facing each other toes-to-toes and nose-to-nose and look at each other until we like each other, and we all turned out just fine.)
Noah really needs a haircut, or a good accessory or two.

There were so many rounds of Hullabaloo.  So, so many rounds.
Lots more snuggling up (Emma and I fight for that blanket every day!)
The kids declared their Martin Luther King Day holiday from school Perler Day 2016.
And we did a whole bunch of puzzles.  Jason and I morphed into the 80 year old versions of ourselves and stayed up late for two nights to finish this one while listening to Gospel Solutions for Families podcasts on the Mormon Radio Channel (which I highly recommend).
That turned into the night of the Great Mouse Hunt, as one scurried out from behind our couch.  Jason tried to catch it with a bowl and a broom (which totally reminds me of that one time he tried to kill a moth with a pillow and ended up shattering the light fixture above our bed instead) but the darn mouse escaped to the basement.  We spent the next day cleaning out the basement, setting traps, and basically living in fear of it popping out again (well, I did anyway).  By the next day the mouse was caught and we haven't seen any traces of relatives since.  Yuck.

Mr. Noah has been battling a nasty cough that has kept both of us for too many days and nights.
It's made for some sweet snuggling though.
The girls joined Adam in his Tuesday nights at the gym.
It's been fun and challenging for both of them.
We did a bit of sewing,
and a whole lot of baking.  Apparently when it's 3 degrees outside I need a steady flow of chocolate chip cookies coming out of the oven to avoid turning into a popsicle.
 There was knitting,
and more puzzling (with a monkey!),
 and helping in the kitchen.
It was a long month, but a great one.  And we only suffered form a little bit of crazy cabin fever!

Boys Will Become Men

Any man can be a father,
But it takes a special man
To be a DAD.

This saying is cross-stitched, framed, and hanging next to my dad's bed, a gift from my mom.

*****

My boys have a dad who takes them to the basketball games, gymnastics, and coaches their t-ball team,

A dad who builds the tallest "mah-bow wooks" tower possible,
 who dresses them up silly,
who waves good-bye hours after he left (because he forgot the first time around),
and who teaches his boys how to shave at an oddly early age.
Not to mention that he always has the best hiding places for hide-and-seek, he hugs and kisses their mom even though they say it grosses them out, and he works super hard for our whole family to enjoy the wonderful life we have- an especially hard task every January, when our FaceTime sessions with him look like this-
My boys have the best dad ever.

Scrookies

Definition- the amazing new way Mom came up with to read scriptures at night, after baths, in jammies, with cookies and milk.
We started reading the actual Book of Mormon (rather than the picture reader version) with the kids this year.  It's been fun to hear them read the stories and learn more about the many ways the Lord blesses us when we choose the right.
And the cookies help, too.
Scrookies (as coined by Adam) were a hit!

Snow Day Isms

Yesterday was rough.  We prayed for a snow day, and today we got one!   It was a tender mercy.  Nothing like a little jammies-and-snuggles break in the middle of the week to get us through (until about 4:30 when the house is upside down and Daddy's out of town and we've got enough energy to fill up the whole house).
We made Valentines Day cards, read piles of books, ate hot soup, shoveled mounds of wet snow, and sculpted snowmen.

I got a few good laughs out of the day, too-

Me- Emma, I've got a problem.  We need to leave the house but there is snow all over the driveway.  What should we do?

E- You can shuffle!

M- Shuffle?

E- Yeah, just put your snow clothes on and go shuffle it!

*****

Me- Kids, gymnastics classes have been cancelled for tonight.  You'll have to go to a make-up class later this week.

Leah and Emma- (Squeals of delight!!!)

Adam- I am not wearing make-up!

*****

Me- Good night, Noah.  I love you!

N- I want a swirly.

M- A what? (Poor little guy is all stuffed up and pretty hard to understand right now.)

N- A swoorly!

M- A swirly?

N- A swoory.... A BOOK!

Oh!  He wanted a story to look at in bed.
