On Motherhood

 Music is made
using the same seven notes in variation.
And only 26 letters combine
To create poems, and plays, and masterpieces.
I realize that monotony can create miracles.
So I will go through the motions of each day
And dance through the pages of my life’s story.
-Katie Van Dyke, Unlikely Truths of Motherhood
Of all the laughs and tears and prayers and frustrations and learning moments and opportunities for forgiveness and humility and selflessness and worry and excitement and delight and growth that life has presented me, motherhood has been one of the very greatest teachers and shapers of who I am becoming.
It's absolutely an adventure, the greatest one of my life.

"Teach These Souls to Fly" by William Blake

Little Bits of Life in April

Leah and Adam went to the temple with their youth group.  A friend sent me this sweet photo.
The young men in our ward come out to play night games one evening.  Leah and I played games and watched from the window.
Laney did too.
Noah started swim lessons!  He hasn't had a great chance to learn how to swim thanks to Covid and moving, but he has done a fantastic job in his classes.  And one day he lost a tooth in the pool!  He knew it was going to come out but didn't mention it to his teacher- he just gave me a LOOK and I went over to take his tooth from him.  His teacher was so surprised and said next time tell me that your tooth came out!  He has already bumped up a level in his lessons and is set to pass another level at the end of this week!
It has been so joyful to watch (most of ) our landscaping come back to life after such a long winter.  I'm espeically happy to see this magnolia tree in the front yard and Grandma Willow the Second in the backyard blooming again!
Never a dull moment when our besties are around- dress ups and giggles for the girls, and Imagination Nation and height comparisons for the boys.
We knew the day was coming, but it was still a shock when the 'ditch' just beyond our yard was set to fire to burn down all of the grasses.  It was fascinating to watch, sad to see the blackened land for a few weeks, and then beautiful to watch the new, bright green grass quickly grow back in.  Now the land looks as lovely as ever.  There is a lesson about rising beyond our trials there!
And in very exciting birdfeeder news, the tufted titmouse visited one day when I was home alone.  I haven't seen him since by boy was that a thrill!

Tulip Time, We Missed You!

We've enjoyed this tradition for so many years now, we had a hard time remembering how we did Tulip Time over the last two years.  Thanks to the trusty blog we figured it out- no trip to Pella in 2021 and a sadly modified trip with no festival and no Daddy in 2020.  So boy oh boy were we excited to make our way back for the full-blown festival this year!
The day is never 100% perfect, but this was just about as close as we've ever gotten.  Hello spring!  Hello blue skies and sunshine!  Hello delicious Dutch treats!
Noah wanted stroopwaffles!
Emma wanted poffertjes!
Everyone wanted to stick their feet in the canal, but no one did.
I wanted Dutch ribbons!
Daddy wanted the Triple Threat (hamburger with gouda, fried egg, and Pella bologna- to be eaten no more than once a year)!
And we all REALLY wanted the sunshine and colors!
We loved seeing the tulips and eating the food.  We didn't go on the horse-drawn carriage, but we did spend not nearly enough time on the wooden playground.
Noah really wanted to drive this tractor.
The line for the bakery was ridiculously long, and the boys held our spot while the girls did a little window shopping.
Noah, tell us how you feel about that long line!
We cut the bakery a little too close to the end of the day, so many of our favorites were gone, but we still managed to find plenty of tasty treats to try out during the parade!
And Adam got his creamhorn.  Yay!
The traditional parade picture- by this point in the night we are all sun-kissed, stuffed, a little tired of being so close together, and definitely tired, but still smiling!  I love this springtime in Iowa tradition that we have made!
Same parade, same floats, same narration even.  This is just about the only parade that we make any effort to attend each year.
The treehouse float and the LEGO float are our favorites.
We weren't able to get a picture of the giant wooden shoes earlier in the day, so the kids humored me by standing in their places on our way back to the car.
Same spot, eight years ago.
Yep, traditions are the best.

Vocal Point Concert!

BYU's a capella mens group Vocal Point came to Des Moines!  Talented, handsome, funny returned missionaries singing, dancing, and testifying of God's hand in their lives?  Sounds like a perfect first concert experience for our kids!
The girls were thrilled but the boys were a little unsure of how much they would really enjoy the show.
Don't be fooled by Noah's end of the day slump, he loved it!
We all did!
And after the show we got to meet them!
Noah shared his beatboxing skills with the master.
Our favorite Tolberts!
Adam, meet Adam.
Crushing!!
Fist bump!
Just look at those grins!!
Best night ever!!
