Bridges of Madison County

I don't know anything about the movie, but when we learned that we live just an hour away from the famous covered bridges of Madison County, it went straight onto our Iowa bucket list.

And fall is the perfect time to check them out.  They were beautiful.  

 Every bridge looked like a postcard straight out of... Iowa.

The six bridges were all originally constructed in the late 1870s and 80s, and have been maintained and updated over the last 140 plus years.  The workmanship is incredible on all of them, and the peak into history was fun to see, especially at the bridge that had a dog and a tire swing!

This picture says, "Look at what a happy couple we are, growing old and driving down dusty country roads together".

This one says, "What the heck were we thinking bringing the kids along on a boring car ride like this?"

But really, sandwiched in between a birthday trip to the zoo and an evening at Zombie Burger, this was a beautiful way to spend a fall afternoon.   

 And it's only in Iowa!

There were fuzzy caterpillars everywhere!  And we saw a beautiful bridal couple getting some sunset pictures taken as well.  That was almost as magical as seeing the unicorn that I told the kids was hiding in the nearby woods.

So while we mostly acted like this- 

We're still glad we did it.
