Spring Recital

Leah's spring recital was a lovely one.  She is progressing nicely with her violin, which is always hard to hear in the day-to-day practices but so apparent in her performances.  She says she feels plenty nervous before a performance, but she always does a wonderful job and her nerves are nowhere to be found.
This recital was extra special because Miss Megan got her entire studio together to perform a beautiful rendition of "Come Thou Font".  The older advanced students played variations, Leah and a few others played the melody, and the beginning students just bowed on the A string.  It was so sweet, and gave me a glimpse into the future- Leah in a symphony orchestra!
Very, very unfortunately, my phone is having issues with video volume, which I didn't remember until after the recital was over.  Hopefully I'll get a better copy of the song from Miss Megan.
Miss Megan's violin instructor made these "hamburger" cookies out of Yorks and Nilla wafers at her recitals when she was six years old, and her mom has continued to make them ever since.  They have become the most exciting part of Leah's recitals for the kids.  Even Emma, who does not like the taste of anything mint, needed to know if there were going to be "ham-buckle cookies" at the recital.  I am going to have to learn how to make these if we ever move on from Miss Megan's studio.
How I love this sweet girl!  Love her talents, her smile, and the light that shines from her.  I love that she's willing to develop her talents and share them with other people.

Landscaping and Such

When we were making the decision to buy or build a house, many people told us that there were a lot of expenses that came with building a house that we needed to factor in to the real cost of a new home- window coverings and landscaping and such.  Of course we just waved our hands and said "yeah, yeah, yeah" and... yeah.  Nearly two whole years into homeownership, a sprinkler system, repaired deck and revamped heating and cooling system later (all the expenses that kept us from getting to it last year) we are finally getting ready to landscape!
These beautiful boxwoods make me happier than I can say.  I just love them.  We had boxwood plants at our luncheon at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building on our wedding day.  I wanted to line our front porch and walkway with them, but we get direct sunlight there and the plants would surely scorch away in such heat.  So these beauties (that a kind friend was getting rid of and offered to us) have found a very happy home on the shady side of our house.  The kids love them, and Emma and I have named them all, from Janice and Larry to Moses (the burning bush) and Frosty the Snowman.
We have big plans for borders, rock beds, garden beds, and more this summer.  And fire pits and patios next summer.  We're just waiting for the weather to get warm and stay warm so we can get going!
In the meantime, Jason stained the deck while I was in Kansas City (crazy man that he is) and the kids were sad that he didn't let them "help".  So I let them help me improve our garage stairs, and they were all pleased as punch to be wielding actual paint brushes.
And the stairs turned out great!
I also decided to take apart the shelves in our living room- they had extra wood that needed to be removed (in my opinion).  I had a great time hacking away at the wood, but laughed at myself when I told Jason, "I don't expect you to finish the job, but I'm not going to do it."
And he did it!  And did a great job!  They look so much better now.
And that is where we find ourselves in the thick of homeownership- always another project to be done!

My Favorite Four

We're thick in the middle of a good routine that I occasionally think will never end.  But I've been in this good place before, and I know now that it always ends.  But this is life today.  Noah is my shadow.  He marches purposefully throughout the house, discovering what's behind closed doors and peeking through windows.  He takes his job to be curious very seriously.
He spends a lot of his days in his carseat, but he never complains.  He just chats on his phone and then falls asleep.  He is my only baby to transfer happily to his crib when he falls asleep in the car.
Noah loves to cuddle when he gets up from his naps.  I love that I (usually) have absolutely nothing else that I have to do when he wakes up, so we cuddle.  Then, once he's a bit more awake, we read books in our chair until Leah gets home from school.
Emma is my opinion-about-everything shopping buddy and daytime companion.  She loves going to the grocery store because she knows she'll get a donut out of it.  She picked out this "blender" as the perfect gift for Grandpa's upcoming birthday.  She has started a pen pal exchange with Grandma, and is never happier than she is when she receives her very own mail.  She wants to move our house next door to Grandma's house.
She is my naptime companion.  Every day we pick Adam up from preschool, come home for lunch, then head upstairs for story time (we can't call it naptime or rest time, just story time).   We snuggle up together on her bed, we read her pick, then we read my pick, then we both roll onto our left side and fall asleep.  After a bit I slide out of bed and get a few things done while the house is still quiet, and she always wakes up and asks if she can watch a show and drink a glass of orange juice.
Adam loves preschool, and wishes he could stay there longer each day.  He gets a fair bit of down time in the afternoon, although he doesn't realize it.  He reads for an hour, plays on the computer for an hour, then spends the rest of his afternoon playing with whatever activity is laid out on the craft table.  He can sit for three hours or more working on his Legos, Knex, or perler beads.  If the weather is nice enough to be outside, he is sometimes the first one out and last one in, other times the only one that refuses to go outside.  Adam always, always, always wakes up in a happy mood.  I appreciate his little ray of sunshine first thing in my morning so much.
Leah dutifully gets up, goes to school, and comes home ready to rest, although she does her homework and practices her violin without too much resistance.  She is like me- often uninterested in talking about her day because she just lived it and doesn't want to relive it.  But her stories and insights into her classroom are always tender.  She told me her best friend at school is her teacher Mrs. Eischeid.  She hesitated to participate in dance party day today because she "doesn't like it when people look at me" (something I've observed but never said as much).  She won a principal's award for scoring the highest in her class on reading assessments.  And here she is imitating Caesar.
Life is simple and good right now.  Summer is just around the corner, warmer weather is surely going to stay soon, and these simple routines of life will come to an end before I know it.

Time Out For Women

A few months ago I decided that I wanted to attend Time Out For Women in Kansas City, and I was so happy to round up a great group of ladies in Ankeny that wanted to go with me.
We spent Friday evening and Saturday listening to inspiring speakers and beautiful music.  Amongst the many speakers, I especially loved hearing from an old BYU professor of Ancient Studies talk about Jesus Christ's love always being enough for everyone, another speaker sharing the reasons we are in the refiners fire- because we are worth refining- and my absolute favorite speaker was this sweet woman Meg Johnson, who is a quadriplegic and proves that anyone can be happy, even when life is hard.
I also fell in love with this song- I couldn't help but sob through it the first 234 times I listened to it.
And I learned that I need to stand up straighter in pictures... These cute ladies are among those that I work with at church.  We have a great time pretending like we are cool enough to hang out with and lead the young women.
And as a bonus surprise, I ran into an old BYU 85th Ward friend Whitney!  The world is such a small place.
It was a fantastic weekend.  I loved the chance to focus on myself, my friendships, and my faith for a fun weekend.  Those chances always leave me feeling refreshed and ready to get back to the real work of my life.

18 Months

I'm not in mourning exactly, but I sure am soaking up these quickly disappearing baby days.  When I was a little girl my parents used to try to get us to hurry into a room by proclaiming, "The maaaaaagic door is clooooosing!"  And now, somewhere in the back of my head I can hear that same voice, only this time it's saying, "The baaaaaaby days are ending!"  I think it every time this big boy comes toddling over to me, responds to my questions with a casual, "yeah" or I find him turning the pages to his favorite books and pointing out his favorite words along the way.  I don't think it's a secret that Noah is the cutest baby in the whole wide universe.
Is there something on my chin?
He was stuck in between the wall and the piano- stuck as a pig and mad as a hornet!  Of course I had to grab the camera first.
First Sunday at nursery!  Noah was looking quite spiffy, and even said "cheese" to the camera...
"Wait, did someone say I have to leave Mommy to go to nursery?
Yeah, I'm not going to do that."
He lasted an hour while I was with him, then dissolved into a puddle of snorting tears the minute I left, despite the tasty snacks and fun bubbles that were offered.  Poor little peanut.  We'll keep trying.
I cannot resist these squishy little feet.  He's started running, mostly away from me, occasionally toward me.
All of my babies have hooked their toes on the high chair just like this.  It's a tiny little detail of babyhood that I don't want to forget.
And this is just about the cutest treasure I've ever discovered.

Easter

Easter is one holiday that I have got figured out.  The Saturday before we have an Easter egg hunt and breakfast with friends.  Someday we'll live somewhere where it is warm enough to not wear our winter coats to the hunt.
Yep, that's Emma up there with a bucket on her head.
This is a fun tradition that we'll continue to keep up as the years go by.  I love the low-key egg hunt (bring a dozen eggs, find a dozen eggs, stop.  Easy-peasy.) and I love getting together with friends and neighbors, even if we're all freezing just a bit.
Saturday afternoon we dyed Easter eggs.
Noah was all over this activity this year, as he is all over every activity right now.  There is not a thing in the world that he is going to be left out of if he has anything to do with it.
Ooh, his floofy hair!  I cut it the next day and I miss it so much!
Easter Sunday was a beautiful and simple day.
We hunted for eggs and made Resurrection rolls for breakfast.
Leah got a new helmet in her Easter basket this year.
Emma was shocked that the Resurrection rolls were really empty, just like the tomb!
We enjoyed the company of some friends and the sister missionaries for dinner.  One of the missionaries is going home this week and she had lots of questions about what life after a mission might look like.  She asked us about college, dating, marriage, children, and more.  It was a sweet moment when I looked out at my family playing on the swingset in the beautiful sunset and told her, "Just trust Heavenly Father.   He has a great plan for you, and if you follow it, you'll be able to live your life as a dream come true."
We were doubly blessed to be able to enjoy General Conference this weekend.  It was so wonderful to listen to the words of our prophet and church leaders.  So many of the talks were about Easter and our Resurrected Savior, and even more were about the strength and beauty of families.  Families are central to God's plan of happiness, and I see that in my life every day!  The kids and I had a great time at our traditional game night while Daddy was at the Priesthood session of conference.  It was getting late I was getting tired, but this tradition is important to me, so we made it happen and had lots of fun!

Emma-isms from Today

I took her picture with this giant box of Junior Mints because she wanted to ship it to Auntie Allison.

Mom!  Did you know that last night Noah tipped over your lovely flowers?  Dey even spilled on de carpet but then we scooped dem back up and now they look like dis! (gesturing lavishly and my now slightly rumpled tulips)
*****

Pulling a library book out of the bag- Can we read this story just one last time before we send it back?
*****

When I'm cold, my teeth are snapping!  Like dis!  (chatter, chatter, chatter)

While listening to a Taylor Swift song with lyrics about love-

You can hear it in the silence/You can feel it on the way home/
You can see it with the lights out/You are in love.

Oh!  Now I get it!  Taylor Swift is so smart- this song is about Jesus!  I can feel the Holy Ghost when the lights are out, and that makes me think of Jesus!

*****
Me- I'm going to Kansas City this weekend!

Emma- Are you going to see Dorothy?

M- Maybe!  Probably not though.  I'm going to a women's conference.

E- Will you go to Dorothy's house?

M- No, but I'm going to listen to inspirational music and motivational speakers, and I'll come back so happy and refreshed and excited to be your mama!

Adam- And there won't be any more consequences!

Okay, this one was an Adam-ism, too, but it was so funny!  We've been talking a lot about natural consequences lately- if you dwaddle in the morning you don't have as much time to eat breakfast, if you don't take care of your toys they will be given to someone else, etc.  Apparently Adam doesn't like all the talk about consequences. Sometimes I wish they could go away, too.

Dates

I'm a lucky lady these day- not only to I get to go on dates with Jason, I get to go out with my sweet babies one at a time as well.   Our days feel extremely structured around here, and I spend most of my time herding cats... I mean shepherding my little lambs.  We're all moving in the same direction but it can take an awful lot of effort to get through some of the most basic of routines- dinner, bath, bedtime being the crowning hoop to leap through each night.  And it's all in a group.  Sometimes I think the needs of just one child would seem so simple if it were just that one child, but multiplied by four and I start to wear a little thin.

We don't do one-on-one dates all too often, but I love it when we do!  I love the chance to focus in on one voice and one heart and to really connect with one child at a time.  During spring break Leah and I took an afternoon to see the new Cinderella movie.  We enjoyed popcorn and M&Ms, sighing at the beautiful dresses, holding hands during the intense parts, and enjoying the lovely uninterrupted conversation there and back.  Immediately after she asked me to turn on some music, she asked me to turn it off again so we could finish our one-on-one chat.
We also did a bit of shopping while we were out.  Leah is going to be looking at me eye-to-eye in no time.  She is such a beautiful, funny, and sweet young lady.  I'm delighted by her every day.
A few weeks later it was Adam's turn.  He really wanted to check out a few sets of Legos at the store, so we headed to Target and parked ourselves in the Lego aisle.  And we looked at every. single. set.  It was something we've never done before- totally unhurried, completely immersed in Legos.  We talked about the different sets and parts and stories and picked out our top three, weighed the pros and cons of each, and selected one to build together.
I love the way Adam's eyes lit up when he realized we were going to sit right there in the Target Cafe and put the Legos together right then and there.  And I said yes to Sour Patch Gummy Bears and jumbo cinnamon sugar pretzels, too!  Adam said it was just like a "Yes" day.  We had a great chat and played with the Legos just as long as we wanted to, and I loved every minute of it.  My heart gets more than a little sad when I think about Adam being gone to kindergarten in the fall.  I know he's going to love it, but I love having him here with me now for our quiet afternoons.  He is a fantastic big brother and a good helper, and I love spending time alone with him every day.  Adam never wakes up in a grumpy mood, and he often surprises me with small services like getting dressed before he's asked or making his sisters beds.  That one melts my heart.
Miss Emma is patiently waiting her turn for a one-on-one date with Mommy- she says she wants to go get donuts.  Until then, here is a picture of one of our one-on-one dates at a sweet friend's birthday party.  We had so much fun dressing up like princesses!  Emma is so full of -isms these days that I'm going to have to devote an entire post to them.  She is quite the character!
And Mr. Snugglepants is happy to get his one-on-one moments in the form of snuggling down with a good book or climbing onto my lap to listen in on a college planning webinar.  But I'm know his upscale dates will come soon enough!
