One Year Older...

I felt so loved and honored on my birthday this year!  Flowers, chocolates, cakes, cards galore, packages, birthday wishes on Facebook, phone calls, texts and surprise visits- it was such a fun day!
Jason so sweetly sent me off to get a heavenly massage and enjoy a few hours of alone time the Saturday before my birthday.  There is something so indulgent about sitting and reading a book, and not talking to anyone at this stage in my life (recognizing full well that 30 or 20 or possibly even 10 years from now I'll be wishing that I had small babies to share my birthday with).  But the very best part of the whole Celebrate Melanie Week came on Monday morning.  I normally hit the weekly ground running with chores, but instead I sat down with a tasty breakfast and a book I wanted to finish and I read and ate and ate and read for over two hours while my littles watched a movie (which they were more than happy to do).
And I giggled to myself the whole time because it felt so very indulgent and irresponsible and wonderful.  And then I got up and did the chores and got on with my normal life, feeling pampered and spoiled, and promised myself that I absolutely will not wait until my next birthday to do it again.  It was such a treat!
Then I pulled the big kids out of school and we headed up to Ames to see our latest pick from the youth matinee series at the theater- The Very Hungry Caterpillar.  It was done with puppets and black lights and the little two especially were delighted to watch the caterpillar eat the fruit, and the clouds change in Little Cloud and the ridiculous transformation of the chameleon in The Mixed-Up Chameleon.  It was such a fun afternoon with my favorite people!
My birthday always signals to me that winter is nearly over and spring is going to come again.  And it was indeed a beautiful spring day.
I did most of my celebrating the weekend before and the days leading up to my birthday because the night of my birthday was also the night of the Relief Society birthday party- celebrating 174 years of one of the oldest and largest women's associations in the world.  I have the privilege of being our congregation's Relief Society president (for an unknown amount of time, but most likely for at least 18 months) so it was a delight to share my birthday with some of my favorite women in Iowa.
These are few of the youngest members of our Relief Society- Jordan, Keri, Kaci, and the two sisters missionaries that are serving in our area right now- Sister Lemmon and Sister Dombrowski, whose birthday is also on March 8th.  I didn't get any pictures of the other 30 women that joined us that night, but it was a lot of fun.
I always love celebrating my birthday!  Jason (who I weirdly don't have a picture of celebrating with) always tries so hard to make it a special day- and week- for me, which usually translates to providing extra chocolate, taking on extra kid duties while I celebrate, and staying up waaaay to late with me because I always like to stay up until midnight to enjoy every minute of my own special day.  Around the time of Adam and Emma's birthdays (late summer) Leah starts complaining about how her birthday is always soooo far away and how unfair it is that she has to wait so long until her birthday comes around again.  And I can understand why- it is so fun to have a day dedicated to celebrations and love!
(Even when one of the most heartfelt birthday wishes you receive from one of your children is "We are going to need SO many candles for your cake!  We're going to need like 52 candles because you are SO OLD!")

Music Class

Parents are invited to music class at the elementary school every spring, and this year I got to attend both Leah and Adam's class.  It was so much fun to see the singing, dancing, clapping, stomping, chasing, giggling, and learning that they do in there each week.
They both love the music teacher, Mrs. Versteeg (or First Egg, or Verstegasaurus, as she tells them her name is).  She is engaging and funny and teaches them all kinds of things, includings rhythms, the solfege major scale, dances, how to sing properly (not belting it out like pop stars do), the real meaning of nursery rhymes like Humpty Dumpty, and most of all, how to love music.  What more could a music loving mama ask for?

Life With My Littles

100 Days of School

We recently celebrated 100 days of school!  It seems like this year is just flying by when I look back at all that we've done so far.  Leah and Adam have been working really hard at school this year.  I have loved having two kids in school- it makes the overall execution of getting up and out the door in the mornings much easier.  And it helps that Adam love love LOVES school- he pouts when it's the weekend or if there is a holiday coming up.  But I think he's starting to understand that he's going to be in school for a really long time, and he enjoys the breaks, although somewhat begrudgingly.

We celebrated the 100th day with a '100 breakfast' and Adam took in 100 Legos.  Leah's class didn't do anything to celebrate, which makes me sad.  100 days of hard work is a huge accomplishment!  On the days when the kids want to sleep in or come dragging home with purple circles under their eyes, I know that they are working as hard as they possibly can.  I occasionally offer homeschooling to Leah (mostly jokingly) but she always simply says, "No, I like school".  Even when it's hard.
I worked as a room mom in both kids classes this year.  There was a very stark contrast between the way that the two groups of room moms wanted to collaborate in each classroom, but the parties got planned in the end and the kids always had a great time.
I also have been going into Adam's classroom to help out once a month- it's been a huge blessing to have a sweet neighbor friend to swap our little kids with while we take turns helping in the classroom.  It's so interesting to put faces with names and watch the behaviors of the kids.  There is a very wide spectrum of ability, respect, and energy in that class!  I'm always so grateful that we decided to send Adam to another year of preschool rather than push him into kindergarten before he was ready.   He is super motivated by his teacher's ticket system, and has enjoyed a variety of prizes earned, including extra recesses and eating lunch with his best friend in the class Solon.  Last month his teacher sent us an email that started out-

I wanted to tell you that Adam is such an amazing boy!  He has such great character, makes good choices, and always does his best!

She asked if Adam would be interested in spending some time with Mrs. Mace, the extended learning program teacher, and some first graders collaborating on books and other ideas.  Of course we said yes, but not without first recognizing that this opportunity was both a result of his age (he should technically be in first grade, after all) and his behavior in his class.  He's met with the teacher a time or two so far and, like most things Adam, didn't feel too passionately about it one way or the other.  It was just another fun thing to do at the place he loves.
School is our life these days.  I'm so grateful for the Mrs. Keese and Mrs. Johnson, for the specials teachers that keep things fun, the helpers in the cafeteria and halls and playground that keep things safe, and the friends that Leah and Adam get to spend their days with.  I'm grateful for Mr. Rob, our neighbor that drives the kids to and from school every day (and never complains about how long he has to wait for them to come running out the garage door).  I love hearing all about the things they've experienced each day as we sit around the table with our after-school snacks (a time when I always try to actually sit with them and listen to them, totally attentive).  They're making good choices and learning good things and trying so hard.

Leah has been doing reports on violins, Vietnam, and dolphins, and learning about multiplication, division, and fractions, and reading all sorts of exciting nonfiction books from stories about abduction to Nazi Germany (her teacher has a much bolder approach to literature than her mother).  And she's learned how to knit!  She made all kinds of treasures for her daddy, her fairy, her siblings, and boy was I excited when she brought me home a scarf!  I like to think that with each of those stitches she was thinking of me while she was at school.
Because I'm always thinking about her!  And her brother, too.  I love that I can hear the kids playing on the playground from our house, and the bells as they go off throughout the day.  Whenever we drive past the school, Noah, Emma and I wave and shout, "HI ADAM AND LEAH!!!"  Sometimes we drive past during recess and even catch a glimpse of our favorite students.  Even though they're off at school they're never too far away, just the way I like it.

All You Need is Love

We enjoyed an extra special Valentine's Day weekend here because Grandma Morales came to visit!  Which meant a date for me and Jason-
skipping school in the name of a visit to the science museum-
enjoying quiet days at home (and beating Grandma at checkers)-
and a whole lot of Valentine's fun!

Cookies, cake, hearts everywhere and even a fun package from Grandma Cathy!
Honestly, we spend a whole lot of time around here trying to share love with each other.  Valentine's Day just felt like another day of celebrating being a happy family!  But having Grandma here meant that we got an extra dose of love.  I always appreciate the help she is willing to give us (as in, I picked her up from the airport and left her with the kids for a Relief Society meeting less than two hours later), and the generous compliments and attention she showers us with ("You are so clever!"  "I never would have thought of that!"  "You are so smart!" "I love that idea!"  Or the kids favorite- "I have fifth-graders that couldn't figure that out!").  It's always fun when Grandma comes!

Oh, Emma-isms

To a friend who has six children, including six-month-old twins, that invited Emma over for an afternoon so I could have a moment of quiet in my house-

E- Your house is really messy.

Friend- Yes, this is what houses look like when you have babies. Does your house ever look like this?

E- No, my house is spotless.  Sometimes we make a mess... but then we clean it up before we go to bed.

*****
Driving in the car with her favorite preschool friend, as reported by the friend's mother-

E- I like you, Little Leah (our name for the friend, so as not to confuse her with our Leah)

LL- I like you, too.

E- I really like you.... even though I'm not always nice to you.

*****
Still in the car, my friend (the mother) tried to explain to Emma that I was running late getting home from Noah's ear doctor appointment and so she would need to stay at their house for a few extra minutes.

F- But just a few minutes.  Your mom should be back soon.

E- Or maybe my mom will get into a car crash and die.  Then I could stay at your house for a long, long time.

*****
Still in the car-

E- I'm going to play at your house Little Leah!  And if I leave anything behind, you can just mail it back to me.  (Little Leah lives 6 doors down from us...)

*****

Mommy!  I can't wear that dress!  It would make me look just dreadful!

*****
Mommy, what if you had blue eyes and caramel hair and I had blue eyes and brown hair?  Then I would be the mommy and you would be dead!

In her Valentines card to Gwamma- Dear Gwamma, I love you.  I love you so much.  Will you make me some fudge when you come to visit me?  You make the best fudge in the whole wide world.  I miss you and Roxy so much that it makes me want to cry.  Please come visit me.  I love you.  Love, Emma.
*****
Emma tiptoed downstairs after bedtime a few nights ago, and she sat on my lap while we looked at pictures of her as a baby.  What seems like forever ago wasn't that long ago at all... She loved the pictures of her tiny self.  She said, "Awwwww, I just can't resist all of this cuteness!  I'm almost going to cry tears... tears of greatness."
*****
Emma is all about highs and lows.  Either I'm the best mommy in the whole wide universe, or I'm the worst mommy she's ever had EVER.  She love love loves me, or she doesn't like me at all today.  It's the best day ever, or the worst day she's ever had.  She's happy and bouncing and skipping and singing (either word for word every song from Beauty and the Beast the musical or Taylor Swift with some serious gusto, every lyric just right) or she's sulking and pouting and glaring.  I'm pretty sure she's exactly what my mother wished I would have some 29 years ago.... and I just love her to pieces.  (Thankfully, I kind of know how to deal with her, too.  I've got a few years experience.)

Me and my big girl-
DJ Emma G-
Leah at a party-
Gimme a ride!
Leah created this nativity in her bedroom-
Game nights galore-
Fun in the snow!

I waited for a family of deer to cross the street one day, which always makes me think of the family of deer that I saw grazing in an orchard the morning of Adam's birth day.  I knew he was going to be born soon because it a was a daddy, a mommy, a big sister, and a new little brother (or so I supposed!).
This girl can rock a hat!
Check out those dragons!
This boy had two main loves in January- Mr. Potato Head-
and puzzles.
