While planning this trip we aimed for enough variation that it wasn't a perfect copy of what we've done in the past, but we had high hopes for recreating a relaxing night on the beach at the Polynesian. So after waiting and waiting (and waiting) for the right bus from Animal Kingdom, we found ourselves at the beautiful resort where we planned to spend the evening sitting on the beach, eating good food, watching the Magic Kingdom fireworks and the Electrical Water Parade, and pretending for one evening that we were staying in such a fancy resort.
Well, things did not go as planned.
This time there were no souvenirs to track down, no chocolate covered macadamia nuts to be found (same as the Goofy Gummies, we struck out on some favorites this trip), and none of us were hungry enough to want to order any food. Instead we quickly made our way out to the beach and discovered two things- one, the beach was packed and looking not the least bit restful, and two, it was cold! Not just chilly because the sun had gone down, between the water and the wind, it was outright frigid and we were not prepared to bundle up. There was still at least 90 minutes to kill before the Electrical Water parade would go by, so we quickly scrapped that plan and pivoted toward something new.
First, we shoved our hands into the sand to say that we did. A beach in January is always a treat, even if it's just for 45 seconds because we're freezing!
Second, Dole Whip ice cream! A delicious first for all of us, and the giant heaters surrounding us made the ice cream a perfectly tasty treat despite the chill in the air.
And third, once we realized we could catch the Magic Kingdom fireworks show from the Monorail, we hopped on and settled in for a ride around the Seven Seas Lagoon.
The fireworks started shooting off as we passed the Grand Floridian, and we had only glimpses of them as we traveled closer to Magic Kingdom. Adam said, "If this was a Disney movie we would all be calm and we would have a perfect view of the fireworks, probably with music in the background."
He's not wrong, but what we did see was pretty magical too.
And then we all decided we were DONE. It was only 8:15, but we happily boarded yet another bus and zipped back to our resort. The kids were very content to spend time playing with their souvenirs and draw in their sketchbooks and read and shower and we all fairly fell into bed at a perfectly reasonable hour with yet another exciting day ahead of us!
Moral of this story: just because things don't turn out the way you planned doesn't mean they won't still make wonderful memories!
