After checking out of our DC hotel, we swung by the Springfield, Virginia house I lived in for 4th-6th grade
and my elementary school, Newington Forest.
Then past my high school home in Montclair, Virginia
and past my high school, Hylton High School. 
They all looked essentially the same as my memory served me.
We also visited the grounds of Washington's Mt. Vernon, which we opted not to tour because 75% of it was closed for renovations.
Lunch at the Mount Vernon Inn was delicious though!
A few hours later we stopped in Williamsburg, Virginia,
and then in Yorktown. History was coming alive!
Plus, ice cream.
And we were getting closer and closer to the ocean!
Although this day felt relatively uneventful, it was necessary to get us where we spent the next three days. We drove all the way to Nags Head, North Caroline and pulled into our beachfront hotel in the dark. We figured out sleeping arrangements in our adjoined rooms - kids in the bigger room with the king-sized bed and the two trundle beds, parents in the smaller room with the full - and happily called it a night of reading, relaxing, and I think some Switch playing by the giggling kids. Finally, after years of trips, I think we have mostly figured out what level of activity and rest each day makes for the happiest family!
