We have Duck Donuts in Iowa, but we had to check out one of the OG locations! George thought they were delicious!
Then we headed over to Kitty Hawk, the location of the Wright Brother's first flight. It was an incredible and sacred space. What an incredible moment in history happened right here!

We went out to walk the length of the first three flights, or run them in Adam's case. He beat the time it took the original flight time! And then we made him and everyone walk up to the top of the Wright Brother's monument.

What an incredible and windy place!
We found the one perfect souvenir of the trip at the gift shop - a kite! We took it over to the nearby Jockey Ridge sand dunes and enjoyed our first truly hot day of 2025.
We didn't know exactly what we were hiking toward, but we were not disappointed at the top!
Eventually the kids took off to explore further than the father and I wanted to trek, so we sat down and watched the kite bob up and down around the East Coast's tallest sand dune, with the Albemarle Sound to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. It was a surreal moment and exactly the kind of feeling that we chase whenever we leave Iowa. There is such a diverse and beautiful world outside of the Midwest!
Eventually we found the kids, dead in the sand, accompanied by George.
I think this was a game. They were not actually dead, but we were all more than a bit sun-kissed. We headed over to the Blue Moon Beach Grill for the second best meal of the trip.
First George ate his veggies.
Then he indulged in key lime pie for dessert!
Then it was back to the beach to enjoy the setting sun.
And to check on George's castle. Still intact!
Ahh, what a perfect day. Minimal driving, amazing views, plenty of fresh air and good food, and the best company anyone could ask for!
