Puerto Rico- Day 2 Beach & Bioluminescent Bay

While we waited for the sun to go down for our trip to the bioluminescent bay, we hung out at a literal neighborhood beach. Basically Raccoon River on steroids. How would it be?!

Once we got to the bio bay we had a snack of chips and water and watched a documentary about the meats that come from Puerto Rico. Ha! 

Then it was time for our adventure through the mangroves and into the Laguna Grande bioluminescent bay in Fajardo! It is one of the top three best places in the world to see the glowing blue microscopic dinoflagellates. We went on a boat this time, and as much as I originally resisted not going on kayaks, it turned out to be AWESOME! We had incredible guides who taught us about the flora and fauna, the fish and coqui and - gasp- scorpions! Leah got to mark that sighting off of her 2026 bingo card early!

and our hands in the water looked like this, which is the most incredible experience in the world. 

We were able to go much farther out in the bay on our boat than we would have on kayaks, which meant a better view of the blue glow. 

Yep, those are stars. 

Possibly my favorite picture of the whole trip- our Brother of Jared stones! We learned about bioluminescence, phosphorescence, and flourescence, but more importantly, we received a reminder that sometimes things that don't go as planned are about to go even better than we could hope! 

Conveniently there was a spot for us to grab some acai and pastelillos after our adventure. Eating all of the local food is one of the best parts of a good vacation!
